At Odds with the Pot

The importance of pot odds is something beginners often forget.

Pot odds are an important concept in poker. It is the ratio between the amount it will cost one to call a bet and the money in the pot. They say that the greater the odds with the pot the more likely one should call. Said in another way pot odds measure how much will one invest and how much will the profit be. Or still yet, it is the risk-reward ratio.

Aside from all the psychological, intellectual and general feeling of the game, poker is factual. It cannot be denied that playing good included these assets but good players till need actual scenarios. The goal of calculating pot odds is to see if it is profitable to call the bet.

One's knowledge of pot odds will help to determine one's chances in beating the other players. One can do this by putting two hands versus each other and know the chances of each has in wining. Included is analyzing the cards of one's opponents and one's chance of winning against them.

During the flop, one will be in many of the following situations. One situation will be that one's hand is not in harmony with the cards on board. With this, either one should fold or bluff. Another situation will be a hit with the flop and now one possess a strong hand. With these, one should bet or raise.

Still another situation will be that one has a drawing hand. To have a drawing hand means there is a possibility of improving one's hand during the turn or river when a hit is likely.

To calculate pot odds, first determine how many outs one has. This out card is a card that is most helpful to your hand. Then one works on calculating the chance of hitting in the next card. One does this by multiplying the number of outs plus one. The sum is one hitting percentage in the next turn.

Now one is ready to calculate the pot odds. With the hitting percentage, multiply it with the pot and the bet. The quotient is the maximum one will be able to call.

If doing the arithmetic is a heavy toll with all the decimals. There is a simpler formula. If one's outs are between one and eight, multiply the outs by four. This will yield to one's chances of hitting the flop. If the outs amount to nine, multiply by four then subtract one. The computation for nine out is good up to computing twelve outs. For outs totaling thirteen to sixteen multiply the number of outs minus four.
